59, अविज्ञाते परे तत्वे

अविज्ञाते परे तत्वे शास्त्राधीतिस्तु निष्फला ।।

विज्ञातेऽपि परे तत्वे शास्त्राधीतिस्तु निष्फला ।।५९।।

अन्वय : 

अविज्ञाते परे तत्वे शास्त्र अधीतिः तु निष्फला । विज्ञाते अपि परे तत्वे शास्त्र अधीतिः तु निष्फला ।।

अर्थ :

परम तत्त्व, आत्म-तत्त्व, परमात्म-तत्त्व अर्थात् परमात्मा के तत्त्व को जान लिये जाने पर शास्त्र का अध्ययन व्यर्थ होता है, और यदि परम तत्व, आत्म-तत्व, परमात्म-तत्व को जब तक नहीं जान लिया जाता है, तो इसी तरह से शास्त्र का अध्ययन व्यर्थ ही होता है। तात्पर्य यह, कि उस तत्व को जिसे परम तत्त्व, ठीक से जान लेना ही अधिक महत्वपूर्ण है, न कि शास्त्र का अध्ययन ।

As long as the Supreme Reality / Brahman / Self / Truth is not known, the study of scriptures is  meaning-less, and in the same way, so long as the Supreme Reality / Brahman / Self / Truth is not known, the study of scriptures is meaning-less.

The purport is :

Attainment of the Supreme Reality / Brahman / Self / Truth is the only important thing that alone matters.

So why scriptures?

Because the scriptures may kindle a spark and inspire the earnestness for finding out the truth.
